Hakim Ishtiaq Hussain
Born on April 9, 1954, Mr. Hakim Ishtiaq Hussain graduated from S. P. College, Srinagar. He did his LL.B. from Lucknow University in the year 1979 and in the same year was enrolled as an Advocate in the Bar Council of Delhi.
He practised in the State of Jammu and Kashmir and appeared before various Courts including the High Court of J&K. He was equally at home in Criminal, Civil, Constitutional and Revenue Law.
He worked as Additional Public Prosecutor and Government Advocate. He was appointed as Additional Advocate General in the year 2003. He also represented various departments and Institutions like General Administration Department, Government of J&K, University of Kashmir, J&K State Board of School Education, etc.
In view of his outstanding contribution in the field of law, he was designated as Senior Advocate by the High Court of J&K in the year 2008. Few days before passing away, he was recommended to be a judge of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir.
Being one of the best legal minds in the State, he has authored many law books on various subjects like the Central and State Laws Manual, Preventive Detention, Code of Criminal Procedure, Code of Civil Procedure, Court Fee and Suit Valuation, etc.
He started the Srinagar Law Journal in the year 1979, a journal which continues to be a widely read journal from Jammu and Kashmir.
He was widely respected because of his exemplary qualities and incredible contribution towards the society especially the legal fraternity not only as an eminent lawyer and author, but as a wonderful human being. His sublimity and humility had conquered everybody’s heart.
Hakim Ishtiaq Hussain was not only a lawyer, but a counselor, a teacher, a peacemaker and one of the best authors on law. He has been greatly appreciated as a teacher for his guest lectures at the University of Kashmir. He reformed the syllabus prescribed for the law course which continues to be a part of the curriculum.
He passed away on 06th of March, 2012 at New Delhi and was laid to rest at Hassanabad, Srinagar on 07th of March, 2012.
His contribution has been overwhelming, however his death was a great loss. We lost an asset.
